FALL 2010 TREND REPORT

Fall may just be my favorite season for fashion.  I begin to feel bored with the effortless summer looks that all seem the same, and by the time september comes around, I immediately want to start layering pieces-regardless of the still eighty degree weather.  I started school just over a week ago now, and cannot even explain to you how much I hate dressing for school this time of year.  It's still too warm to wear boots, heavy sweaters and leather jackets, but due to our somewhat strict dress code, I can't show up to school in shorts and a crop top.  Basically, the challenge is to dress for the warm weather despite the fact that I'm wearing jeans to school everyday.

Anyway, with some summer trends being incorporated into fall wardrobes and others fading away with the season, there's a lot of room for new styles to appear.  The look for this fall that I feel is most prominent on the runway as well as in magazine editorials is the "equestrian" trend.  This isn't a proper name for it or anything, but the word seems to come to mind considering many of the elements that are coming up now: riding boots, leather, pony hair, riding blazers, and even the skinny jean mocking breeches.

All of this may sound similar to the "prep school" trend that reappeared a couple years ago (possibly promoted by Gossip Girl), but this time the look incorporates a little less "school girl" and more of a relaxed feel.  For example, you might see a pleated skirt worn with a button down, but the shirt is untucked.  Another aspect that sets this season apart from ones in the past is the mixing of prints and fabrics.  This trend was seen early on this year, with stripes and polkadots finally making peace and being worn together, and will continue on through this trend as well.

Rag & Bone, Fall RTW

Of course, other trends will continue into the fall as well.  The military trend will transition back into the jackets you may still have from spring, as well as cargo pants that have been all the rage recently.  For a wardrobe refresher, put away those loose-fitting pocket tees and opt for an oversized silk button down like so:

Leather shorts, skirts, pants, leggings, jackets--just about anything you can name, is also on the rise at the moment.  Mixing it with other fabrics, such as silk or denim, gives it a less edgy feel--perfect for fall.

Other things to keep in mind:
*leopard print
*neutral hues
*army green/other earthy tones
*leather accessories
*gold staple jewelry
*neutral makeup & red lips

Some pieces to invest in might include a good pair of riding boots, a pleated skirt, a blazer and maybe even a leather jacket.  Since these items may get pricey, opt to go to Forever21 or Zara for basics to save money for other pieces.  Visit Shopbop's fall trend page to purchase some new additions to your fall wardrobe.
